TEACHING RECAP

Summary: God calls us to honour our parents—not because they’re perfect, but because honour is the posture of a healthy heart. It’s how we treat, speak about, and care for them, especially as they age. In learning to honour our parents, we’re also learning to honour God and those he’s placed in authority. It’s not always easy, but it’s right, and it leads to blessing in our families and in our world.

Main Points:

  1. Honouring parents means treating them as truly important and valuable.

  2. Honouring parents means caring for them as they once cared for us.

  3. Honouring parents trains us to honour all in authority.

  4. Honouring parents is often difficult, but it’s right and it pleases God.

  5. Honouring parents brings God’s blessing to individuals, families, and society.

On-Ramps:

  • This week, how can my attitude, words, and actions show honour toward my parents?

  • For those still at home: How can I honour my parents through obedience and respect?

  • For those on their own: How can I honour my parents through thankfulness, care, or practical help?

  • For those whose parents have passed away: How can I honour them in how I think and talk about them?"

Discussion

  • What stands out to you from this passage? How does this passage most challenge or encourage you?

  • What does it mean to “honour” someone according to the sermon? How is the biblical idea of honour different from simply obeying or submitting? Why do you think God includes this as one of the Ten Commandments?

  • How does the way we treat our parents shape the health of families and society as a whole? What examples from today’s culture show a loss of honour toward parents or elders, and what do you think the consequences have been?

  • How can we honour parents who have been absent, hurtful, or imperfect? What does healthy honour look like in situations where reconciliation isn’t possible or safe?

  • In what ways does learning to honour our parents teach us to honour God and other authorities in our lives? How might this practice shape the way we relate to leaders, teachers, or church community?

  • What’s one way you could intentionally show honour to your parents (or spiritual parents) this week? If your parents have passed away, what could honour look like through gratitude or remembrance?

  • How do you want to respond to this passage in your daily life?

PRAYER

  • How can we pray for you as a group?
