TEACHING RECAP

Summary: Jesus begins his story in a manger, choosing the lowest place so he could come near to us. He doesn’t wait for us to climb our way to him—he comes down to our level, showing that God’s welcome always starts with humility. And the same is true for us: mission grows when we show up simply, listen well, and see ourselves as fellow travellers in need of grace. God has made room for you—and now invites you to make room for others.

Main Points:

1. When we look at Jesus, we see God’s welcome and we learn how to share it.

2. Jesus is humble.

3. Mission begins with humility.

On-Ramps:

- Do you believe God has room for you and wants to welcome you into his family?

- Where might you be seeing yourself as above others and need to confess or come back to humility?

- Who is one person you can make room for this week by slowing down and truly listening?

Discussion

  • What has stood out to you from this 10 Words series? How have you been challenged or encouraged by it?

  • Have you ever had a horrible experience when it came to hospitality? Share it with your group. How did you feel after such an experience?

  • Read Philippians 2:5-8. Do you think that there is a connection between hospitality and humility? How do we see Jesus display both hospitality and humility in his life?

  • Think about your own life. What are the enemies of humility in our lives? How can you foster a greater degree of Christlike humility in your life? After discussing this together read 1 Peter 5:5-6 & Philippians 2:3-4.

  • As Christ changes us, making us into people who are more and more humble, we will become inclined to practice hospitality towards others. What forms can hospitality take in our lives? Who is God laying on your heart to be hospitable to?

  • What do you think of Pastor Jeremy introducing this idea of the 9 households that live closest to you and us first, knowing their names, second, knowing any details about them, and third, knowing anything about any of their hopes, dreams, fears, struggles, etc? Where are you at with your neighbours? Do you think it’s true that the more we listen to others share with us what is going on in their lives the more open they will be to us sharing what God has done in our lives?

PRAYER

  • How can we pray for you as a group?

  • Next week: Luke 5:27-32; Romans 15:5-7; Hebrews 13:1-2
