TEACHING RECAP

Summary: Some places feel too broken to change. Some people seem too far gone. In Jonah 3, we’re invited to see what happens when God sends his word into the places we’ve almost given up on.

Main Points:

1. God calls his people to go where he leads and speak what he says.
2. No person, place, or situation is beyond the reach of God’s mercy and power.
3. Jonah’s message was simple, but God’s word was powerful enough to do the work.
4. Real repentance begins when we believe God, humble ourselves, and turn from evil.
5. The king used his influence not to protect his image, but to lead people toward better lives.
6. God keeps moving toward undeserving people with mercy, ultimately offering salvation through Jesus.

On-Ramps:

- Where are you obeying God’s call, and where are you still running?
- Where have you stopped believing God can bring real change?
- Where are you tempted to soften, edit, or complicate what God has said?
- Where do you need to soften your heart and turn back to God?
- Where has God given you influence, and how can you humbly take responsibility?
- Do you believe God wants to save you, and how will you respond to him?

Discussion

  • What stands out to you from this passage? How does this passage most challenge or encourage you?

  • How deeply do you believe that God’s power can change things in our world? Are there areas where, if you are honest, you don’t actually think things can change? How does this passage challenge that disbelief?

  • Where in this passage do you see that God is the God of second chances? Has there been a time in your life when God gave you a second chance?

  • How does Nineveh’s response in verse 5 contrast with Jonah’s responses to God? How do these responses compare with your response to God’s call on your life?

  • How simple is it for you to communicate the truth of God’s word to those who do not trust in Jesus? Are there times when your witness has softened or complicated the gospel?

  • In the places where you have influence, how might you model true repentance and obedience rather than simply religious observance?

  • How do you want to respond to this passage in your daily life?

PRAYER

  • How can we pray for you as a group?
