TEACHING RECAP
Summary: How should followers of Jesus live in a city that does not share their beliefs? Acts 17 takes us into the streets, marketplaces, and intellectual centre of ancient Athens, where Paul encounters a culture both impressive and spiritually lost. Join us as we explore what faithful Christian witness can look like in our own changing city.
Main Points:
Paul looked carefully, feeling the city’s brokenness.
Paul entered intentionally, going where people gathered.
Paul spoke thoughtfully, boldly proclaiming the gospel.
On-Ramps:
Look carefully, even when reality is hard to face.
Live intentionally wherever God has placed you.
Listen thoughtfully, then speak courageously.
Discussion
What stands out to you from this passage? How does this passage most challenge or encourage you?
What about our city do you love and even see Jesus’s heart in action? Where do you see and feel the brokenness of our city; the places that need to experience Jesus’s heart?
Paul went to where people gathered and used his unique gifts and calling to direct people’s attention to the reality of what they’re really seeking. Where do you have the unique opportunity and relationships to be the person who points others to Who they’re really hoping for and seeking? Are you worrying, complaining or engaging? Where can you engage more deeply?
Mission requires great listening and great courage. Where do you need to listen more and where do you feel like you need more courage? Pray for both and, if you’re in a group, take some time to pray for those for one another.
How do you want to respond to this passage in your daily life?
