TEACHING RECAP
Summary: Some of us are sitting on the sidelines when we could be making a difference. Others are carrying too much, struggling to let anyone else help. What if the key to accomplishing more isn't simply working harder, but learning to serve and lead together? An ancient story from Exodus reveals a better way.
Main Points:
Everybody has something valuable to contribute to God's work.
We weren't meant to serve alone, and it doesn't work.
Good leaders equip and release others to lead and serve.
On-Ramps:
If you're spectating, step into serving.
If you're serving, invite someone alongside you.
If you're leading, give away some keys.
Discussion
What stands out to you from this passage? How does this passage most challenge or encourage you?
Jethro was an outsider who had only recently acknowledged the greatness of Israel's God, yet he had valuable wisdom to offer Moses. What does his example teach us about who God can use and how we should value the contributions of others?
In verses 13–18, Jethro tells Moses that the way he is leading is "not good." What was wrong with Moses' approach, and how would Jethro's advice benefit both Moses and the people?
Our society often celebrates independence, individual achievement, and doing things ourselves. How does the picture of shared responsibility in Exodus 18 challenge these values? Where do you see similar attitudes affecting the church?
The sermon highlighted two potential barriers to fruitful ministry: people who don't serve and leaders who don't involve others. Which of these do you think is a greater challenge for the church today, and why?
Jethro encouraged Moses to identify trustworthy, capable people and give them meaningful responsibility. What makes it difficult for us to invite others to serve or release responsibilities to them? Where might you have an opportunity to do this?
How do you want to respond to this passage in your daily life?
